David A. Bates was born and grew up in Centerville, Tennessee. In 1994, Mr. Bates received his Associates of Science degree, summa cum laude, in political science from Columbia State Community College. In 1998, he received his Bachelor of Science degree, summa cum laude, in political science from the University of Tennessee at Martin. While attending UT Martin, Mr. Bates served as a legislative intern in the Tennessee General Assembly for Representative Phillip Pinion.

In December 2000, Mr. Bates received his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the University of Tennessee College of Law, graduating cum laude and in the upper portion of his class. While at UT College of Law, he served as the President of the UT College of Law Criminal Law Society. He was also on the Dean's List and he received academic honors in Evidence, Criminal Procedure and Family Law. While in law school, Mr. Bates also served as an Acting Assistant District Attorney General for the 6th Judicial Circuit of Tennessee.

Mr. Bates married Crystal Haskins in 1995, who is also from Centerville. They are the proud parents to two children, Gracey Alexandra and Emmaley Elizabeth. Mr. Bates is a member of the Tennessee Bar Association and the Maury County Bar Association. In 2005, he was elected to serve as the President of the Young Lawyers Association. He is also active in the Kiwanis Club of Maury County and is a member of Goshen United Methodist Church.

Mr. Bates has practiced law since he was licensed in April of 2001. His primary area of practice with the firm is civil litigation. He also practices in real estate, estate planning, and domestic law.
